Not a good quality image - and Sabby looks a lot like Barbara Windsor!

Some tantalising shots. Far too expensive to rent (yes - rent! They won't even sell them), they give valuable new information of Sabrina's travels in Oz.

Sabrina - Norma Sykes

15 January 1959

"Two well-known personalities - one British and the other Australian - spent the lunch-hour together in MELBOURNE today practising for a charity performance to be held on Sunday for the Red Cross Society. Champion miler HERB ELLIOTT....and his eye-watching time-keeper SABRINA. They'll both take part in Sunday's International Charity cricket match at St. Kilda Oval. While ELLIOTT did some routine lunch-hour training at Como Park today, most eyes were on SABRINA, dressed for the occasion in matador pants and white sweater. Sunday's cricket teams will be led by former Test captains - Sir LEONARD HUTTON and IAN JOHNSTON. But for the onlookers the best was yet to come. SABRINA had gone to the Park to do some quiet bowling. She's to bowl the first ball at Sunday's cricket match. and it was obvious today that she badly needed a lot of practice. Coached by an obliging Army cricket team, SABRINA finally bowled one ball which connected with the bat; and she became so enthusiastic about cricket that she stayed for more than an hour." Sabrina in Australia, 12Nov58

Not a great photo of our Sabby: cropped for publication, obviously.
If it weren't for the fur (and other [ahem...] distinguishing features), I wouldn't have recognised Sabrina.

In the pic's filename was "12 November 1958, Australia" - but this was before Sabby landed here (on the 18th. Someone has goofed. It was either Rome (and the date may have been right) or Australia (and the date was wrong).

Thanks to Simeon for 'shopping out the editor's cropping marks!

Sabrina in St Kilda, Melbourne. (Around 1959)

13 May 2010 - Chris wrote to ask me to pass a message to Sabrina...

I have just bought a house in St Kilda, in Melbourne. Part of the attraction was the house used to be something of a party joint in the 50's. I received photos from the previous owners passed down from the original owners that include your good self enjoying a swanky do. They 'claim' you were a regular visitor!
On looking you up on the internet I discovered you are a Stockport girl. I am from Altrincham so it just shows what a small world it is.

It would be fascinating to talk to you and learn about the scene in yesteryear.

Best regards

Chris

And Chris attached two photos!

The Second (1962) Sabrina Visit

04 Jan 1962: "Sporting a cute bow and newly acquired American accent, actress and nightclub entertainer Sabrina (Norma Sykes) returned to Australia to see her friend Lee Gordon*. Sabrina had just completed a film, 'Satan in High Heels', in Hollywood, but acting was never her greatest asset"

It was an ill-fated second visit.

* Lee was an American who came to Australia in the early 50's. He was a music promoter who had promoted Frank Sinatra, Elvis and others in USA. He decided to do it here and hired the Sydney Stadium. Over a few years he brought out Sinatra, Johnny Ray, Bob Hope and every rocker and crooner except Elvis and Bing. He also started the first strip clubs, Jazz clubs, Hamburger Diners, Plastic Paint and one of Australia's Legendary record labels.. Leedon. He died nearly a pauper in London around 1963. From www.ozstar.com

Read a letter from Ken who knew Sabrina - and treated her breasts for sunburn! - during her Australian visit

In 1962, Sabrina returned to Australia to promote The Twist for Lee Gordon - it was not a happy time.  Read the newspapers to get the story.

"This young man could not believe his luck and the photographer couldn't keep his camera steady, when Sabrina danced The Twist at the Peppermint Lounge. The medical profession said it would cause "dislocated joints, slipped discs, sacroiliac damage and muscle sprains". The only muscle sprain here was ocular"

I believe this group to be from Australian publications, but can't guarantee it.

Im not at all sure what Sabrina is doing with this UFO puppet.

Note the big arrow pointing to the ring on Sabby's finger.
